Cobbler’s children’s shoes

Andrew S - 12 th February 2014

So many of our proverbs have such relevance to our contemporary lives and this one is one of my favourites.

We have just been through a very enlightening review to identify our role as cobbler.

When we set up, 14 years ago, we left the heady world of Big Comms to build a business where we wanted to work and others would join us to build something very special and different. We knew that we needed a certain sort of talent to help us power our business and so we paced a huge importance in getting our values well-articulated, based on the business purpose and focused on building a strong culture.

One of these is “Always on” and exists to guide our behaviours in such a way that we are all constantly observing and are deeply interested in the world around us and especially the world that surrounds our clients. So we are voracious readers, observers and consumers of knowledge and innovations that can help us help our clients more as well as drive the intellectual fire power of the business.

Over the years some brilliant talent has joined our adventure and is helping to drive the business to new heights. Recently, however, we all began to feel that something was not right, some of our behaviours were drifting towards something less appealing than originally meant.

So we took time out from being cobblers and have taken a long hard look at our children’s shoes, our behaviours. With some honesty, challenge and a touch of brutal truth we saw that ‘Always On’ had become ‘never, ever stop to get off the treadmill’ which meant we have not spent enough time on all of our futures and too much time on just sorting out today. Great for the balance sheet now but not good for our long term success and purpose.

To the rescue has come some other values such as ‘Fair’ and ‘Happenability’ to help us rebalance and make the behavioural alignment that will maintain our course and elegantly improve on the original.

Not only that but we have learnt another great lesson we can pass on to our clients to help them improve.
